Water Heaters Recalled for Fire and CO In early April, A.O. Smith Water Products (Ashland, Tenn.) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled about 1500 natural gas and propane water heaters for possible fire and carbon monoxide (CO) dangers. There have been no reports of injuries or incidents. According to CPSC and A.O. Smith, the water heater's flue gas temperatures can exceed safe limits and produce excessive temperatures in the venting unit. High temperatures could lead to a fire. In addition, the water heater's exhaust can leak into the surrounding room, posing a CO hazard. The 75-gal. water heaters have "A.O. Smith" or "State" printed on the side. They were sold by independent contractors and plumbers across the U.S. from November 2007 through January 2008 for between $1000 and $2500. The A.O. Smith and State model and serial numbers included in the recall are printed on the water heater's rating plate. A.O. Smith models include FCG-75 300 and FCG-75 301 with serial numbers from L07A071460 through L07A144966. State models include GS6 75 XRR S and GS6 75 CRR S with serial numbers M07A009387 through M07A072884. Consumers should stop using the water heaters and contact A.O. Smith for a free repair. The company can be reached at 866/880-4661 or visit www.hotwater.com. |
